Acoustic Materials FAQ & Buying Guide

Expert answers on soundproofing materials, acoustic performance, manufacturing, and international wholesale purchasing.

Choosing the right acoustic materials involves more than comparing prices. Buyers need to consider noise type, test standards, specifications, installation methods, and supplier capabilities. This ANIKA Acoustic guide helps distributors, contractors, importers, and project buyers make informed decisions.

1. Acoustic Material Suppliers & Manufacturing

Q1. Where can I find an acoustic materials supplier in China?

ANIKA Acoustic is a China-based supplier of soundproofing, sound absorption, acoustic underlayment, and thermal insulation materials. We work with overseas distributors, importers, contractors, and project buyers sourcing products such as MLV, rubber underlayment, PET acoustic panels, wood wool panels, rock wool, and glass wool.

Q2. Is ANIKA Acoustic a manufacturer or a trading company?

ANIKA Acoustic combines manufacturing capabilities with a network of specialized production partners. Our manufacturing-related operations cover Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV), acoustic underlayment sheets, wood wool acoustic panels, PET acoustic panels, and acoustic PU foam. For other product categories, we collaborate with carefully selected manufacturing partners. This integrated model helps us coordinate product specifications, quality requirements, competitive quotations, and international shipments. Factory visits and production-line inspections can be discussed and arranged for the relevant facility.

Q3. Why buy acoustic materials from a specialized supplier instead of multiple factories?

Different acoustic projects often require different types of materials. Working with a specialized supplier can simplify technical comparisons, purchasing coordination, documentation, and shipping. ANIKA helps buyers select materials based on the application rather than treating every product as interchangeable.

Q4. Can ANIKA supply multiple acoustic materials in one shipment?

ANIKA can coordinate mixed orders of suitable acoustic and insulation materials, depending on product availability, order quantities, packaging, and container-loading requirements. Please send your product list and destination so our team can review the shipment plan.

Q5. Can international buyers visit ANIKA production facilities?

Production-line visits and factory inspections can be discussed in advance. The facility and arrangements depend on the product being purchased. Customers may also request available production photos, videos, specifications, and relevant test documents.

2. Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Buying Guide

Q6. What is Mass Loaded Vinyl, and how does it work?

Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) is a flexible, high-mass membrane used to help reduce airborne sound transmission as part of a properly designed wall, ceiling, floor, or equipment enclosure. It is principally a sound barrier, not a replacement for sound-absorbing room panels.

Q7. What thicknesses of MLV does ANIKA offer?

ANIKA supplies MLV thickness options including 1.2 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm, subject to the selected specification. For reference, one 3 mm product is approximately 5.4 kg/m². Confirm the exact surface mass, dimensions, and tolerances in the applicable product data sheet.

Q8. Is 2 mm or 3 mm MLV better for soundproofing?

When materials and installation conditions are otherwise comparable, higher surface mass can improve airborne sound insulation. Thickness alone does not determine the result: sealing, framing, frequency range, flanking paths, and the complete tested assembly also matter. Ask for the relevant product and system data.

Q9. How is Mass Loaded Vinyl manufactured?

Depending on the production line and product specification, MLV manufacture can include raw material preparation, mixing and compounding, extrusion, sheet forming and calendering, cooling, inspection, cutting, and winding. Selected products can also be laminated with non-woven fabric. See our production-line overview for images of the equipment and process.

Q10. Can MLV be supplied with non-woven fabric backing?

Yes. Non-woven fabric-backed MLV can be supplied for applicable specifications. The additional layer creates a different surface finish and may be useful for selected handling or installation needs. Please confirm fabric type, bonding method, dimensions, and intended application before ordering.

Q11. Can MLV completely soundproof a room?

No single MLV membrane can guarantee a completely soundproof room. The overall performance depends on the complete building assembly, penetrations, air sealing, structural connections, and other transmission paths. Material selection should follow a defined acoustic target.

3. Acoustic Floor Underlayment

Q12. What is the best underlayment for reducing impact noise?

There is no universally best underlayment. The correct product depends on the floor build-up, loads, target impact-sound reduction, moisture conditions, and installation method. ANIKA offers options including rubber, PU, and XPE/EVA-based materials for different project needs.

Q13. Is rubber or PU underlayment better for sound insulation?

Both rubber and PU underlayment can reduce impact noise when specified and installed correctly. Their performance depends on dynamic stiffness, compressibility, density, thickness, loading, and the floor assembly. Compare equivalent test reports and mechanical properties before deciding.

Q14. What is the impact noise reduction performance of 5 mm rubber underlayment?

For ANIKA rubber underlayment model ANK-700NC05, a product-specific report indicates a weighted impact sound reduction ΔLw of 23 dB under its stated test conditions. The result should not be treated as a universal on-site guarantee. Request the complete report and confirm that its tested configuration matches your project.

Q15. What is the difference between IIC and ΔLw?

IIC (Impact Insulation Class) and ΔLw (weighted improvement in impact sound insulation) refer to different rating approaches and test contexts. They are not interchangeable numbers. Check the named test standard, test assembly, and units when comparing floor systems.

Q16. Which acoustic underlayment is suitable for floating floors?

A floating floor needs a resilient layer that suits the design load, screed or panel system, and acoustic target. Important considerations include dynamic stiffness, long-term compression behavior, thickness, and system compatibility. Share the floor cross-section so ANIKA can discuss possible options.

4. Acoustic Panels & Sound Absorption

Q17. What is the difference between soundproofing and sound absorption?

Soundproofing reduces sound transmitted between spaces; sound absorption reduces reflections and reverberation inside a space. MLV and appropriate floor underlayment are used in sound insulation assemblies, while PET, wood wool, and acoustic foam panels are commonly used for interior acoustic treatment.

Q18. Are PET acoustic panels effective for office noise control?

PET acoustic panels can help control echoes and reverberation in offices and meeting rooms. Actual absorption varies with thickness, density, mounting, air gaps, and frequency. Consult the product-specific sound absorption report for a suitable specification.

Q19. What is the difference between PET and wood wool acoustic panels?

PET panels are popular for flexible interior designs and color options. Wood wool acoustic panels offer a distinctive wood-fiber texture for architectural finishes. Their NRC values, frequency response, fire classifications, sizes, finishes, and mounting details vary by product; compare the exact data sheets.

Q20. What does NRC mean in acoustic panels?

NRC stands for Noise Reduction Coefficient. It summarizes absorption at specified frequencies using a defined test method. A higher NRC typically indicates greater absorption in that test context, but NRC does not show how well a wall blocks noise between rooms.

Q21. Can acoustic wall panels block noise from neighboring rooms?

Standard acoustic wall panels primarily manage reflections within a room. To reduce noise coming through a partition, the design may require a suitable combination of mass, separation, insulation, airtightness, and soundproofing components. Assess the whole wall assembly.

5. Wholesale Purchasing, Testing & Shipping

Q22. What test reports should buyers request for acoustic materials?

Ask for documentation relevant to the actual product and application: airborne or impact sound insulation reports, sound absorption reports, physical-property data, and any required fire or environmental compliance reports. Verify the test standard, tested construction, issuing laboratory, and whether the report covers the proposed product specification.

Q23. Does ANIKA offer wholesale acoustic materials for distributors?

Yes. ANIKA supports international distributors, importers, contractors, and project buyers. Wholesale quotation terms depend on the material, specifications, quantities, packaging, and destination. Contact us with a product list for a tailored offer.

Q24. Can ANIKA provide custom thickness, sizes, or packaging?

Customization can be discussed for selected materials depending on technical feasibility, minimum order quantity, and production arrangements. Common requests include sheet or roll dimensions, thickness, packaging, and labeling. Provide drawings or a specification sheet when possible.

Q25. What information should I provide for an accurate acoustic material quotation?

Please include the product or application, required dimensions and thickness, density or surface mass where relevant, quantity, performance targets, testing and certification requirements, destination, trade term, and preferred packaging. This helps us prepare a comparable, project-specific quotation.

Q26. Can ANIKA arrange international shipping for acoustic materials?
